Andrew,
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted that the Senate is voting TODAY on critical voting rights legislation -- which we think could include the For the People Act.
Reminder: This sweeping bill would take dramatic steps to protect our freedom to vote, to make our voices heard in the electoral process, and to make sure we can pick leaders who deliver on our priorities -- from health care to defunding the police to reparations.
Meanwhile, white supremacist politicians in 48 states have introduced 389 anti-voter bills.
They are fighting with everything they have to silence our voices. We need the For the People Act to protect our freedom to vote no matter where we live. The vote this week in the Senate is a serious turning point for this country. Will we protect our freedom to vote? Or will we let white supremacy and authoritarianism rule?
With so much on the line, we need everyone to contact their senators NOW -- regardless of their political party -- to demand they vote for the For the People Act. Andrew, passing the For the People Act is an essential step in our battle against white supremacy. Use our easy tool to call your senators and demand they support our freedom to vote. Phone calls are easy and have a huge impact. Last month, we saw a group of Texas Democrats walk out of their state legislature to stop the passage of one of the most extreme anti-voter bills in the country. We've seen Georgia -- where so many Black voters made their voices heard in 2020 that they turned the state blue -- pass their own sweeping anti-voter laws this year.
These attacks won't stop in Texas, they won't stop in Georgia, and they certainly won't stop anytime soon. Passage of the For the People Act is the only means to prevent and stop this new Jim Crow. The Act includes large sections tackling voting rights based on the late Rep. John Lewis's signature bill, the Voter Empowerment Act. It includes automatically registering voters anytime they interact with the government (like at the DMV) unless they opt out, ensuring that early voting is equally available in every state, and restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated people. It also enables vote by mail in every state, prohibits discriminatory voter roll purges, and much more.
We need the freedom to vote so we can have the freedom to live, to thrive. Our ancestors fought for it -- from the 15th Amendment to the Voting Rights Act. Now it's our turn.
Call your senators right now -- we've made it easy with our tool, and we know they track the number of their constituents who support and oppose legislation. Demand Ted Cruz and John Cornyn vote for the For the People Act if it comes to the floor this week. In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation
